It’s never about money! In all cases it is what is behind the money or what it is connected to that creates the dysfunctional relationship.

“There’s never enough” “If only I had just a bit more” “I’m not sure how I’m going to make it through until next pay day” These are just a few of the repeating phrases I hear from clients in one to one sessions and at my workshops when we get onto the subject of money, it always evokes such strong emotion in people.

Motivational author and speaker Louise Hay said that it was much easier to teach a workshop on sex than it is on money; money causes more arguments in relationships, and sometimes brings out the worst in families when it comes to inheritance. At this time, we are told that the world as a whole is in or on the verge of a recession, as oil prices increase so does the price of just about everything we need to function in day to day life. In the midst of all this we perceive that a minority are becoming richer and the rest are becoming poorer. Is it any wonder that all this causes more stress and the concern of “There’s never enough”?

This was the main concern of Sophie, who was literally at the point of losing her apartment as she could no longer afford the monthly rental, let alone find a way of paying her other monthly bills, and all of this before even thinking about her food bill. “There’s just never enough for anything” Sophie told me, defeat ringing clear in her voice.

What colour is enough I asked her, she looked somewhat surprised at my question, as many people often do when asked what colour is enough or what is the colour of money. Colour is not really something you associate with increasing your financial situation, but as Einstein said “you can’t use the same thinking to solve a problem that you used to create it” so in this current economic climate we need to get creative with money, and not just a little bit creative, a very big bit creative to change our understanding of money, but most importantly we need to change our relationship to money.

If money was our romantic partner, he/she would have left a long time ago! We worry where is it going to, is it coming back and sometimes if it is here we hold on tightly for fear of it leaving us. If we were in relationship counselling I think most of us could be described as being a bit co-dependant, mistrusting, possessive, and maybe our beloved darling money has very good reason to be leaving or having left a long time ago.

With all the “money couples” I’ve worked with around the world the reply from money has always been the same “I love you and really want to be with you but you don’t let me”

It’s never about money! In all cases it is what is behind the money or what it is connected to that creates the dysfunctional relationship.

Sophie’s colour of money was red, it meant a lot to her as this colour was around in her childhood in many different shapes and forms, the most prominent being the big dark red books and people talking of demanding money letters in bold red writing, this was the time when her father’s business collapsed leading to eventual bankruptcy. From the age of 8 there was no longer enough money to do things they had once done together as a family. Her father was no longer the happy present man she had known and loved, he was distant both emotionally and physically and it was all money’s fault according to the 8yr old Sophie!

Shortly after her red money story came to light the healing commenced, Sophie received a promotion that increased her monthly income. Over the coming weeks she started to feel safe enough to let go of and sell some of the things that were cluttering her apartment, which prior to our work she had said she “needed them, just in case”. A while later she needed to create more space in order for her new partner to move in! Again, something Sophie was definitely not expecting, she met him after her promotion, this also changed her financial situation, because he would be sharing half the rent and bills!

This is just one story of what can happen with The Colour of Money, with colour you never know what exciting surprises it has in store for you, all you do know is that it’s going to be good.
